Compass Rose International

MISSION

Compass Rose envisions a world where all women embrace their internal power to maximize their contributions to themselves, their community and the world.
We aspire to give every young woman the tools she needs to find her own true North. We believe these young women do not need to be empowered from an outside source. We guide each young woman to inpower herself from the inside out.

VALUES

Mind, Body, Spirit Connection: Mind-body-spirit means that our wellness comes not just from physical health, but from mental health and spirit health as well.

Education: We understand that education is the foundation of realizing our true potential. We seek fresh, new ways to educate. We are life-long learners.

Growth: We are constantly evolving and resilient in the face of life’s challenges, seeing them as opportunities for growth.

Alignment/Integrity: We match our thoughts, words, feelings, and actions in perfect alignment. We create our lives by design, not by default.

Imagination: We use our creative thinking to envision new possibilities for our life and the world.

Compassion: We are warm and understanding toward ourselves and others during adversity and feelings of failure.

Self-Sufficiency: We all have the capability to provide for one’s own needs, through self-advocacy and sustainable foundations.

About

We believe creating strong young women cultivates healing and improving in their lives and communities.
Compass Rose International was founded in 2021 by Katie Hilborn, a former teacher and founder of Global Orphan Prevention, an anti-trafficking charity in Nepal.

As the charity was developing programming to help young women at risk of being trafficked or those in the foster care system, it was realized that their programming was so beneficial, that they opened it up to helping all young people, and formed a new charity to benefit American youth.

Ideas for developing innovative programming stemmed from her transition teaching in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to Denver Public Schools in Colorado. It was a stark contrast adapting from an Eastern educational system rooted in the importance of a body-mind-spirit connection to a Western one where spirit health was completely glossed over. The spirit health (not to be confused spiritual), of a student’s life, included valuing a purposeful life, transcendence, and actualization of different dimensions and capacities of human beings. It focuses on creating a balance between physical, psychological, and social aspects of human life.

Due to this integral missing component, she found difficulty reaching and helping a large number of the students under her tutelage. Many came from broken homes, and it wasn’t uncommon for students to make death threats, call her swears, or leave the class in the middle of a lesson. Broken herself, she had completely given up on the students midway through the school year and put in her resignation.

The guilt began to eat away at her, and she knew giving up on the kids wasn’t the answer, and was left feeling like a failure.

Then an idea came to incorporate some of the ancient practices of exploring “inner space” that she adopted from her travels and teaching in the Asian educational systems. She developed her now-signature technique called Guided Dream Journeying and started a club to reach what the school labeled as the “high flyers” – the kids that staff and teachers felt were unhelpable. Through guided visualization and storytelling, she led the students to receive answers from their subconscious minds. Students emerged from the journey with profound messages of hope, inspiration, and direction; solutions that had to come from within, and answers that any adult could tell them 20 ways sideways, but wouldn’t register because they themselves weren’t discovering the answers. She saw an instant transformation.

Several years later, and long after her tenure as a public school teacher was over, she remembered the technique’s success. She began beta testing the program with the young women under Global Orphan Prevention’s care. Witnessing similar results; prompted her to expand the programming to reach all young people and Compass Rose International was founded.

Global Orphan Prevention addresses root causes contributing to children who are orphan trafficked & sex trafficked.

Our Learning Centers & Dormitories allow girls who normally wouldn't have access to education due to distance, the opportunity to live near the local school and graduate. In some cases, they will be the first in their families to receive an education.
Nepal charities and local schools have worked with us to develop leadership curriculum and provide training for young women within a community. When a young woman can see her potential, and in turn, continue that ripple through her own community, is when trafficking stops.
"Give the net, not the fish" is a philosophy we stand by. Local banks partner with us to provide a micro-savings and loan program, allowing recipients to take out micro-loans that wouldn't normally qualify to start businesses, improving income, and promoting commerce. Traffickers can earn an entire year's income from the sale of one girl. By replacing their income stream, trafficking is reduced. Global Orphan Prevention helps form women's groups, facilitate training, and provide farm-to-market facilitation.
When constructing our learning centers and educational facilities, we always employ locally. This helps inject income generation into the community. Additionally, we reduce transportation costs by bringing the brick-making to the community. We provide innovative machines, training and support, while empowering entrepreneurs to produce high-quality bricks, using local materials ideally suited to rural communities. Afterward, the machines are donated to the community to use as a social business. To date, we have employed 100 community members through our brick-making program.
Tackling the child trafficking epidemic wouldn't be complete without providing the skills and training to defend oneself should the situation arise. Volunteers work with us to provide training programs and workshops at local schools.
Current efforts have trained over 80 young women in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
We partner with international rescue organizations to provide valuable data that assists in the rescue of children from the villages in which we operate.
To date, we have helped in locating 7 Nepali girls in Indian brothels. They are currently awaiting extraction.
